Who We Are

Our Mission

Founded in 2020 and officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 2024, Boston Backpack Project is a nonprofit organization with a deeply personal mission: to support individuals facing homelessness and addiction in the Boston area. Inspired by a commitment to provide care, compassion, and dignity to those often overlooked, we distribute backpacks filled with essential items to people in need. Our backpacks are more than just supplies—they’re a sign that someone cares, and that no one is forgotten.

Our work is grounded in the memory of those who have lost their lives to substance use disorder, honoring them by offering hope and support to others still struggling. Through donations and the work of dedicated volunteers, Boston Backpack Project provides resources such as hygiene items, warm clothing, and other essentials that help alleviate the hardships of life on the streets.

With each backpack, we aim to offer not only basic necessities but also a sense of community and kindness. We believe that everyone deserves compassion and support, regardless of their circumstances. Our volunteers and supporters make this mission possible, helping us build a brighter future for Boston, one backpack at a time.

In Memory of Michael Mitrano

Boston Backpack Project was founded in loving memory of Michael Mitrano, whose kindness, humor, and love for the simple things in life continue to inspire our mission. Michael faced the struggles of substance use disorder, a battle he fought with courage and resilience until his passing in 2011.

Michael was a gentle soul, known for his kindness to everyone he met. He had a special connection to the outdoors and found joy in nature, working as a landscaper—a job that let him spend his days surrounded by the beauty of the natural world. He had a big heart for animals of all kinds and was endlessly patient and kind, especially to the smallest creatures. Frogs, bugs, and all of nature’s tiny wonders fascinated him, and his love for animals was genuine and deep.

In the spirit of Michael’s memory, each backpack we fill is packed with the same care and compassion he showed to others. Every backpack represents the kindness he brought to the world and is offered in his honor to bring comfort to those who may be struggling as he once did. His love for others and his gentle nature remind us that each life we touch through Boston Backpack Project carries forward his legacy of kindness.

Michael may no longer be with us, but his spirit lives on in every backpack filled, every person helped, and every act of compassion. We honor his memory by bringing a bit of his warmth, gentleness, and love for life to those in need.
